The 1st Armored Division was a part of several important missions, in addition to stabilizing cities and neighborhoods, and continues to support the Army's operations in the Middle East on location and from Fort Bliss. In 2003, it became the Army's largest division-based task force in history when it deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 1995, Old Ironsides was sent to support Operation Joint Endeavor in Bosnia-Herzegovina, and then to Kosovo in 1999 during Operation Allied Force. In 1990, the division deployed nearly 18,000 troops to the Middle East during Operations Desert Shield and Storm where it captured over 1,000 prisoners of war and destroyed hundreds of enemy tanks and weapons. Old Ironsides deployed to Fort Stewart for the Cuban Missile Crisis and trained there for several weeks until the crisis died down in 1962. The division saw action in Sicily (1943), with occupying Allied Forces in Germany (1945), and then, upon its return to the U.S., at Fort Hood during the Atomic Field tests in the 1950s. The 1st Armored Division, or Old Ironside as its called, was started in 1940 at Fort Knox and became the first American armored division to fight in Operation Torch in North Africa in 1942. ![]()
